The heart of Hawaii’s Volcano Circus is our membership of more than 200 committed and talented teachers and performing artists.  Motivated by educational, cultural and entertainment goals and objectives, the HVC board, staff and members include internationally recognized circus arts professionals.

HVC members have taught and performed at festivals and conventions across the United States, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Australia and are among the very best in their artistic field.

Board of Directors and Board of Advisors

HVC is governed by two boards composed of professionals in the areas of education, culture and arts, humanities, law and business.  These volunteer positions consist primarily of Big Island residents who assist in planning programs and guiding HVC staff.
 
Chairperson -- Tom Kidwell.  Mr. Kidwell has been an active HVC member since 1985.  He is Owner and CEO of Renegade Juggling Equipment one of the largest suppliers of circus arts equipment in the USA. Secretary -- Kaitlin Backlund.   Ms. Backlund is Executive Director of Citizen Alert, a 25-year-old grassroots environmental group based in the State of Nevada, providing education, advocacy, and empowerment to citizens on matters of environmental policy and environmental justice.
Treasurer -- Eric Marantz.  Mr. Marantz is a professional CADD designer with 15 years experience as a Technical Director and Producer in Theater.  He is Director of the HVC-organized annual International Circus Arts Festival. Chair Emeritus -- Henrik Bothe.  Mr. Bothe is past president of the HVC board has been a professional entertainer for over 15 years. Mr Bothe serves on a local school Board and is head of the Children’s playground committee of our local Community Association. 

Management and Staff

Executive Director -- Graham Ellis.  Mr. Ellis has served on many community boards including terms as president of Seaview Community Association, president of the Akebono Theater and member of the Pahoa School Management Board.  He is a founding member of HVC and has been the Director of the Hiccup Children’s Circus for  the last 16 years. After-School Activities Director -- Karolyn Allen.  Ms. Allen is a Family and Community Leadership organizer and long term Hiccup Circus project leader who has served on many school and community boards.
Office Manager and Costume Designer -- Irene Kral.  Ms. Kral is an RN who has worked in community arts programs for 4 years. Previously, she worked many years as a community mid-wife. Project Co-ordinator -- Susan Mielke.  Ms. Mielke has an MA in Education and has been a Waldorf School teacher specializing in languages and physical theater arts.  She has 8 years experience organizing and teaching circus arts programs in several countries.
Publicity Officer -- Gene Gerrard.  Mr. Gerrard is the Founder and  Executive Director of Sports Acrobatics Hawaii a 501 (c ) (3) non profit organization.  He has been an international acrobatics judge and currently teaches and performs acrobatics. Youth Co-ordinator -- Ayla Rocafort.  Ms. Rocafort has been a Hiccup Circus member for five years.  She teaches circus arts and entertains professionally.
